Story
Returning to Saint-Martial for the funeral of his late boss, Jérémie’s stay with the widow Martine becomes entangled in a disappearance, a sinister neighbor, and the shadowy intentions of an abbot. The film has been widely panned. It is predicted to be included in the Cannes Premiere Sidebar in the Official Competition of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. “Misericordia” takes its time, and once it starts shooting, you can’t help but laugh until it ends with the last shot. With very gentle humor throughout, the film tells the story of a quiet man who visits the village to attend the funeral of his mentor. There, he meets his mentor’s wife, son, and priest, who seems to be saying something other than what he’s thinking. What I like about “Misericordia” is how it suddenly changes its writing to make the viewer laugh, all in a dark style. Reminded me of Deerskin (2019) and The Bra (2018). (Screened at the 2024 MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.)
